Arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport and head down the western coast to the relaxed beach town of Bentota. Spend the afternoon on a peaceful Bentota River safari through mangrove-fringed waterways, watching out for kingfishers, monitor lizards, and the occasional crocodile, before settling into your beachside hotel.

Continue down the coast to Galle. Begin with a Madu Ganga river safari through mangrove islands and cinnamon plantations, then wander the cobbled lanes of UNESCO-listed Galle Fort. End the day with a swim at the golden curve of Unawatuna Beach.

Drive a short way along the southern coast to Mirissa. Stop at Weligama Bay to watch surfers and stilt fishermen, with the option of a beginner surf lesson, then enjoy a leisurely afternoon on Mirissa's palm-fringed sands and a fresh seafood dinner by the sea.

Continue east along the coast toward Yala. Visit the seaside Kirinda Temple, perched dramatically above the Indian Ocean, before an exhilarating afternoon jeep safari in Yala National Park, renowned for the world's highest density of leopards.

Climb up into the highlands to Ella, one of Sri Lanka's most picturesque hill towns. Hike to the top of Little Adam's Peak for sweeping views, then get your heart racing with a zipline at Flying Ravana adventure park before a relaxed evening in Ella town.

Spend a second day exploring Ella's lush tea country. Hike the scenic Pekoe Trail Stage 16 through tea plantations and forest paths, then take a guided tour of a working tea factory to see how Ceylon tea is plucked, withered, and processed into the world-famous brew.

Take the famously scenic train ride to Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka's "Little England." Hike across the windswept moors of Horton Plains National Park to the dramatic cliff edge of World's End, then enjoy an afternoon at leisure exploring the colonial-era town and Gregory Lake.

Descend out of the highlands to Kandy. Enjoy a fragrant spice garden walk en route, then visit the revered Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, the holiest Buddhist shrine on the island. End the day with a traditional Kandyan dance and drumming performance.

Drive north into the Cultural Triangle. Climb the legendary Sigiriya Rock Fortress, marvelling at its frescoes, water gardens, and panoramic summit views. In the afternoon, slow the pace with a Dambulla village tour and a home-cooked Sri Lankan meal.

Drive a short distance east to the medieval capital of Polonnaruwa. Explore its UNESCO-listed ruins of palaces, stupas, and stone Buddhas by bicycle, then embark on an afternoon jeep safari in Minneriya National Park, famous for its impressive elephant gatherings.
