Three days inside Sri Lanka's ancient heart Two thousand years before Europe built its cathedrals, a parricide king raised a palace on top of a 200-metre rock and painted its western face with women in gold. Three days is enough to climb it, to walk a forest monastery where ascetic monks renounced even images of the Buddha, and to watch a hundred elephants come out onto a dry reservoir bed at dawn. Dambulla’s five caves hold 150 Buddha images beneath ceilings painted and repainted for nearly 2,000 years. After the gentle climb, head to Pidurangala for a short forest walk and scramble to the summit. At sunset, see Sigiriya’s Lion Rock in profile, with the plains and ancient irrigation tanks stretching beyond.

Sigiriya opens at seven, and early is the way to climb. Beat the heat and crowds to explore the water gardens, Mirror Wall and summit, where ancient foundations and rock-cut cisterns reveal astonishing engineering. Later, slow down with a bullock cart, catamaran ride, chena walk and a traditional rice and curry lunch cooked over firewood.

Minneriya or Kaudulla depends on the water levels, but either offers a chance to witness huge gatherings of Asian elephants. Go early for fewer vehicles and the best experience. Later, explore Ritigala, a quiet mountain monastery with ancient meditation terraces, stone bridges and forest paths, wrapped in its own cool microclimate and legendary Ramayana connections.
