Five caves beneath an overhanging rock hold 150 Buddha images, with every ceiling covered in paintings. Dambulla has been a working temple since the 1st century BCE, with changing styles visible cave by cave. Later, climb Pidurangala through a forest monastery and scramble to the top for a view Sigiriya can’t offer: Lion Rock in profile at sunset, with the plains and tanks stretching behind it.

Enter Sigiriya at seven to beat the heat and queues, then climb past frescoes to the summit ruins, where ancient cisterns, foundations and a throne reveal the real marvel: a 1,500-year-old hydraulic garden whose fountains still run in the monsoon; later, slow the pace with a Dambulla Village Tour, travelling through rural farmland, meeting local families and experiencing traditional village life, cooking and everyday customs.

Explore the Ancient City of Polonnaruwa by bicycle, passing the royal palace, Vatadage, Lotus Pond and council chamber, before finishing at Gal Vihara, where four colossal Buddha figures are carved from a single granite wall, including the remarkable fourteen-metre reclining Buddha.

Visit Aluvihare Rock Temple, where Buddhist teachings were first written onto palm leaves during a 1st-century BCE famine, continue to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy for the evening puja, then finish with a Kandyan Cultural Dance Performance featuring traditional drumming, colourful costumes and energetic ceremonial dances.
