Basawakkulama Wewa

Basawakkulama Wewa, also known as Abhaya Wewa, is one of the oldest reservoirs in Sri Lanka, located in the ancient city of Anuradhapura. Built by King Pandukabhaya around the 4th century BCE, it played a crucial role in the early development of the Anuradhapura Kingdom by providing a reliable water source for agriculture and daily life. The tank spans approximately 1.2 square kilometers and reflects the advanced hydraulic engineering skills of ancient Sri Lankans. Surrounded by historic temples and ruins, Basawakkulama remains a serene and historically rich site that blends natural beauty with the legacy of Sri Lanka’s early civilization.
