Independence Square & Arcade

The pavilion where Ceylon became independent in 1948, built as a stone echo of a Kandyan royal audience hall and ringed by carved lions. Mornings belong to Colombo's joggers; evenings to families and wedding photographers. The restored Dutch-era asylum next door now houses Arcade Independence Square, which makes this the rare Colombo stop that works just as well in heavy rain.
