Minneriya National Park, located in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka, is a renowned wildlife destination, especially famous for its large gatherings of elephants. The park's main attraction is "The Gathering," a spectacular natural phenomenon where hundreds of wild Asian elephants congregate around the ancient Minneriya Tank (reservoir) during the dry season. This event is considered one of the largest known gatherings of Asian elephants in the world. The elephants migrate from surrounding forests in search of water and food as the dry season causes other water sources to diminish. The best time to witness "The Gathering" is during the dry season, from May to October. The peak months for this spectacle are generally August and September. Safaris are typically conducted in the afternoon, from around 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, as the elephants come out to drink, bathe, and feed on the fresh grass near the reservoir.
