Beaches & Coast
Sri Lanka has two monsoons running on opposite schedules, which is the single most useful thing to know when planning a beach trip. From November to April the south and west coasts — Mirissa, Unawatuna, Bentota, Hikkaduwa — are at their best. From May to September the weather flips and the east coast takes over, with Arugam Bay, Trincomalee and Pasikuda getting the calm water instead. There is almost always a sunny coast; it just moves.
Beach time also combines unusually well with everything else here. Yala is a couple of hours from the southern beaches, the whale boats leave from Mirissa harbour, and Galle Fort is a short drive along the coast. Most of our coastal routes pair a few unhurried beach days with a safari or a stretch of the Cultural Triangle rather than sitting in one place for a fortnight.
Mirissa for whales and a sheltered bay, Unawatuna for calm swimming, Bentota for watersports, and Galle Fort within easy reach of all three.
Arugam Bay for surf, Pasikuda for shallow calm water, and Trincomalee for diving at Pigeon Island — in season when the south is wet.
Yala and Udawalawe sit close enough to the southern beaches that a safari morning and an afternoon swim fit into the same day.
Every plan is a starting point — change the route, the vehicle and the stays, and watch the price update as you go.
