Trekking & Hills
Sri Lanka's hill country sits between 1,000 and 2,500 metres, which means walking here is cool, green and far less punishing than the coastal heat suggests. Horton Plains ends at a cliff dropping nearly 900 metres, Adam's Peak is climbed overnight by pilgrims to reach the summit at dawn, and the Knuckles range holds cloud forest that feels a long way from anywhere.
Most of the good walking is day-hike scale rather than multi-day expedition, so a private vehicle works well: the driver moves your luggage to the next town while you walk, and picks you up at the far end of a trail rather than making you loop back. Weather matters more than fitness here — World's End clouds over by around 10am most days, so an early start is the difference between a view and a wall of white.
A moderate 9 km loop across high plateau grassland. Start at first light — the escarpment is usually swallowed by cloud within a few hours.
An overnight climb of around 5,500 steps to reach the summit for sunrise. Pilgrimage season runs from December to May, when the route is lit and busy.
Little Adam's Peak is an easy hour, Ella Rock a harder half day, and the Pekoe Trail links tea-estate paths into longer stages through the hills.
Every plan is a starting point — change the route, the vehicle and the stays, and watch the price update as you go.
