Culture & Heritage
Sri Lanka has eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and six of them are cultural. The Cultural Triangle alone holds two former capitals that ran for a thousand years each, a fortress built on top of a two-hundred-metre rock, and a cave temple complex painted continuously since the first century BC. This is one of the oldest continuously inhabited landscapes in South Asia.
The sites sit within a couple of hours of each other, which makes them practical to combine — but they reward pacing rather than a checklist. Climbing Sigiriya at three in the afternoon instead of midday, or reaching the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in time for the evening puja, changes the experience entirely. A private driver is what buys you that flexibility.
Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, two ancient capitals, plus Sigiriya rock fortress and the Dambulla cave temples — all within a compact area of the dry zone.
The last kingdom to fall to colonial rule, and the temple that houses Sri Lanka's most venerated relic. The evening puja is worth planning your day around.
A Portuguese and Dutch fortified town on the south coast, still lived in, best walked along the ramparts in the hour before sunset.
Every plan is a starting point — change the route, the vehicle and the stays, and watch the price update as you go.
